MODEL LESSON PLAN

Submitted by: Sunny Broadus-Bowen
Lesson Title: Women in Business

Goals/Objectives:
After participating in the in-class discussion on the three films pertaining to women in business, each student of the University 101 class will be able to:

1. Recognize the various roles women play in the business world
2. Understand ways women attempt to succeed in the business world
3. Master the upcoming mid-term exam on women and business

Student Preparation:
The student must have previously watched the three films, “Working Girl,” “Baby Boom,” and “Disclosure” in class.

Materials/Resources:

1. Compare and contrast grid (white board)
2. Completed film reviews (3)

Outline of Lesson/Procedure:
The class will begin by breaking up into five groups of four students. Once they are in their groups, they will discuss the similarities and differences of the characters, Tess, JC, and Michele, the three main characters of each film already viewed. After twenty minutes of discussion, the class will come back together as a whole and each group will present three similarities and three differences of each of the characters. The students will fill in a grid with their ideas. We will then facilitate a discussion on the similarities and differences between the characters. We will have the students discuss whether or not they agree with each character’s actions and beliefs and why. We will then discuss possible alternatives to the character’s behaviors and ideas. We will close by having the students think about ways they would personally handle the issues seen in each film.

Assessment/Outcomes:
The purpose of this class is to discuss in detail issues women deal with in the business world. By working in groups, students can have more experience in dealing with diverse personalities. The students also will understand that different people have different opinions, and what is considered “right” by one person may not be “right” for another. Not only are the students learning about women in the business world, they also are building social and networking skills. They will express what they have learned in their mid-term exam.
