Lesson Title: How to Stay Healthy in College (A Two-Day Lesson Plan)
Goals/Objectives:
After viewing a presentation from the Peer Health Educators and participating in a class discussion, each student will be able to:
- Locate the Health and Wellness Center and be aware of the types of services they offer for students.
- Assess their personal food journal and understand the difference between healthy and unhealthy food choices.
- Understand how to create a balanced diet and eat healthier foods.
- Develop an exercise program that is right for them.
Student Preparation:
- The students will complete a three-day food journal and turn it in a week prior to the actual class. (This is where they each receive three blank sheets with grids to fill in what they ate for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and beverages.)
- The students will need to read pages 97-103 in Transitions.
Materials/Resources:
Three copies of the food journal will be given to each student two weeks prior to the class. The Peer Health Educators will give out an information packet containing various information on nutrition and exercise intended to assist the students with their presentation.
Outline of Lesson:
- The food journals will be handed back to students with teachers comments on them before the presentation begins.
- The presenter(s) will arrive approximately 10-15 minutes prior to the start of class to set up their presentation and hand out the information packets
- The presenter(s) will speak for about 50-55 minutes.
- After the presenter(s) are finished speaking, they will take questions for 5-10 minutes.
- During the next class meeting, the class will be divided into groups of four or five to discuss ways that they can develop a healthier diet (assessing their food journals) and ways that they can develop an exercise program that fits into their schedule.
- The class will come back together as a whole and each group will share with the rest of the class the ideas that they came up with in terms of a healthier lifestyle. They will emphasize the following:
- eating a balanced variety of foods
- incorporating an exercise program into their daily lives
The teacher will end the class with closing comments about their homework assignment due the next class meeting.
- The homework assignment will be for students to write a journal entry on an exercise program. In the journal, students must tell how they plan to develop their individual program, where they will fit it into their schedule, and what activities they plan to incorporate into their exercise program.
Assessment/Outcome:
This lesson plan is intended to help the students understand how to develop a healthy lifestyle while in college in terms of nutrition and exercise. It is intended for students to know where the Health and Wellness Center is located and that there are trained students there who can help them develop a plan to create a healthy lifestyle. Later in the semester, the students will complete another three-day food journal to see if their eating habits have improved. Students will also write a final journal entry at the end of the semester and assess their success as far as changing any unhealthy eating habits and creating a productive exercise plan.
