Lesson Title: Writing An Effective College Paper
Goals/Objectives:
After completion of this lesson, the student will be able to do the following:
- Become familiar with the MLA form
- Construct a bibliography.
- Be able to create a title that reflects the content of the paper.
- Understand the value of a thesis statement as a means of creating an academic argument.
- Understand how to cite a source correctly.
- Understand copyright and infringement laws.
Student Preparation:
Students should have completed a tour of the library.
Students should have read pp. 48-49 in Transitions about the Writing Center at the University of South Carolina.
Students should have read pp. 31-32 in Transitions about
cheating and plagiarism.
Materials/Resources:
Student will receive handouts on the following:
- Reference Guide to Bibliographies
- Reference Guide to MLA formats.
- Reference Guide to Thesis Statements.
Outline of Lesson:
- Discuss MLA format and its usage at the University.

Assessment/Outcome:
After this lesson plan, students will become familiar with MLA format and understand how to write a research paper correctly using it. They also will have a thorough understanding of plagiarism and cheating and understand the consequences of doing so.
Above all, they should be able to complete a research paper according to the standards set by the Modern Language Association (MLA) and the Univerisity.
Assignment:
Students should complete a paper to demonstrate their knowledge of writing an effective college paper.
