USC Bingo

MODEL LESSON PLAN

Submitted by: Brandon J. Ray
Lesson Title: USC Bingo

Goals/Objectives:

  • Learning valuable resources on the USC Campus
  • Learning interesting places outside of the USC Campus
  • Learning about future plans for USC

Student Preparation:
Students should read Chapter 1 in Transitions 2002-2003, “Your New University Home”, pages 1-20. This chapter covers everything from off campus movie theaters to where to go if you want to try out for the USC Dance Company.

This activity should be done towards the beginning of the semester. Students will learn valuable tips on where to go during the evenings so their first resort is not always down to Five Points. This Chapter also gives them an idea of how to get involved on campus. College is much more valuable the more a student is involved on campus.

Materials/Resources:

  1. Bingo cards and chips for everyone in the class.
  2. A list of Bingo “clues” for the instructor to go along with the answers on the Bingo card.

Outline of Lesson:

The peer leader will start by handing out the Bingo Cards and chips to each student. Each student will have their cards turned over to the blank side while they are being handed out so there is no discussion about what is on the card. When everyone has a card and is ready, they will flip over their cards (all of them are different) and I will begin reading off clues to the answers on their Bingo Card. The first thing they will fill in is their BONUS space, which is directly in the middle of the card. They can only fill in the BONUS space if they were offered a scholarship to come to USC. For the rest of the spaces, they are not allowed to use other students for help. This is more or less a test to see how well the students are learning about Columbia’s resources.

Assessment/Outcome:
This Bingo game is a way for students to learn more about the Columbia area and what USC has to offer them. They will realize after his game that there is more to college than class and partying. They need to get involved and that point is stressed in this activity. Students also need to learn what is available for fun in the Columbia area. Since they are underage, they should not be going out to drink in Five Points. This activity points out fun alternatives.

Example of Questions and a Bingo Card answer:

  2. If you are at the corner of Blossom and Assembly Streets, which new building is being built directly across from the USC Coliseum?
