Celebrate Black History Month at UofSC

UofSC will celebrate Black History Month 2015 with numerous events for students, faculty and staff throughout February. Featured events include:

Black History Month Kickoff: “All Eyes on Me” – The Life and Times of Tupac Shakur
5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2 — Russell House Ballroom 

  • The kickoff for Black History Month will occur on Monday, Feb. 2 and is entitled “All Eyes on Me: The Life and Times of Tupac Shakur”. The event will feature Ms. Stacy Jones, who is the processing archivist for the Tupac Shakur collection at the Robert W. Woodruff Library of the Atlanta University Center, Inc. in Atlanta, GA. Ms. Jones will present and discuss Tupac Shakur’s life and how his music, poetry, and acting influenced american culture. Sponsored by Office Multicultural Student Affairs.

Being an LGBTQ Person of Color Discussion Group
6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5 — Russell House 205

  • This discussion group is set up to provide a safe and supportive space for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning people who identify as people of color to build a community of support and understanding. Topics will focus on the experiences of life at the intersections as a queer person of color at USC. – Facilitators are Dominic Boyd and Joseph Sewell.

OMSA Night @ the Movies: “Dear White People”
9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5 — Russell House Theater

  • Sponsored by Carolina Productions and Office of Multicultural Student Affairs

Soul Food Cook-Off
3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12 — Russell House Patio

  • This cook-off will be a competition among student organizations and individuals. Students, faculty and staff will celebrate the USC NAACP chapter founder’s day with Chef Green from Sodexo serving as the judge. Sponsored by National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Jeopardy: Black History Version
7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23 — Russell House Theatre 

  • Like any other Jeopardy, the Association of Minority Pre-Health Student’s Black History Jeopardy will consist of five categories focusing mostly on questions relating to the health issues black people face specifically. The categories will include, Black History at USC, Why is Soul Food Bad?, Stereotypes of Blacks, Health Disparities Facing Blacks, and Prominent Figures in the Black Health Movement. Instead of individual contestants, teams will compete against one another to obtain the greatest number of points to win the game. Sponsored by the Association of Minority Pre-Health Students.

Stroll Out Stigma
7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27 — Darla Moore School of Business, Johnson Auditorium

  • Strolling involves members of a group lining up and dancing uniformly in a forward movement. The forward progression of strolling exemplifies solidarity and pride, which makes it a great way to promote respect and kindness for self and others and stroll out the negative impact of body shame and stigma. No matter your body type, race, sexual orientation, gender, physical or mental ability, age, or anything else–you deserve to live unapologetically in your own skin. The champion of Stroll Out Stigma will be determined by audience polling. The team who is “Audience Favorite” not only gets bragging rights, but will also receive a trophy to commemorate their performance. Sponsored by Student Health Services.
