The Student Success Center invites faculty and teaching assistants teaching core first and second year courses to participate in Success Connect, an early intervention initiative. Through Success Connect, faculty and staff can refer undergraduate students who are not attending class, experiencing academic difficulties or are in need of academic assistance.

In fall 2014, 51 percent of Success Connect referred first-year students who met with a consultant following their referral passed the course they were referred for compared to only  35 percent of first-year students who did not meet with a consultant.

There are four Success Connect referral types:

  • Academic Assistance Referral: To identify students who may be experiencing academic, personal, or transitional difficulties (Disengagement, difficulty with course content, & poor quiz/exam performance)

  • Class Absence Referral: To identify students who are not attending class

  • Mid-Semester Academic Report: To identify students who are at risk of failing courses  mid-point during the semester

  • Withdrawal Referral: To identify students who have expressed interest in withdrawing from USC

When you submit a referral, it provides an alert for staff to contact the student.  Students are informed through phone calls and email messages that they need to contact the Student Success Center to schedule a "Success Consultation" and their instructor to discuss their course progress.

In Success Consultations, staff meet individually with referred students blending methods of academic coaching and advising to co-design plans for renewed academic success.  Consultations are designed to empower students to utilize resources and adjust to the rigor of college level coursework.  In addition to success center services, staff refer students to campus partners including academic departments, the Career Center, the Counseling Center, Pre-Professional Advising, the Math Tutoring Center, Student Disability Services and Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention and Prevention.
