The University of South Carolina has made tremendous strides in creating a campus that supports and encourages walking and bicycling.

The university is collaborating with City of Columbia on a new pedestrian and bicycle master plan for the city that will improve amenities for pedestrian and cyclists, many of whom are Carolina students, faculty and staff.

The Walk Bike Columbia plan was unveiled at public meeting on Thursday (Jan. 22). The plan outlines bicycle developments in and around campus, including linked transportation paths and sidewalk and intersection improvements. There also is a proposed bike sharing program with most bike stations located on campus.

The plan only will be posted online a short time before adjustments are made and next steps taken. Therefore, it is imperative that members of the Carolina community give their input before Feb. 6.

Review the plan online and email your feedback to Yancey Modesto, university campus developer, at ymodesto@fmc.sc.edu
