The Office of Pre-Professional Advising is piloting a new seminar course this semester designed to offer pre-medical students an insider’s look at the world of primary care physicians.  With the passage of the Affordable Care Act and the aging population, there is a critical shortage of primary care physicians.  This class, unique in its design and scope, will give the student a rare opportunity to see if this career path is the right for them.

In partnership with University Specialty Clinics, students will be paired with a doctor specializing in internal, family or pediatric medicine for 25 shadowing hours. Students will keep journals to reflect on their experiences, identify why these concrete experiences and skills will assist them in their future pathways and take part in class discussions to share with their peers about their observations.  In class, students will hear from physicians who will delve deeper into issues of patient interactions and the daily work life of a physician.

Other sides of medicine such as education and prevention of disease, surgery within obstetrics and gynecology, patient diversity within a family practice and emergency medicine will also be discussed.
