For the eighth year, the Carolina Master Scholars Adventure Series, an award winning summer program for academically talented rising sixth through 12th graders, will sponsor Carolina Gives Back to highlight a local charity each week. Students participating in the Carolina Master Scholars Adventure Series are learning about community responsibility and are bringing items that the charity needs or making a monetary donation.

Starting the week of June 3, faculty and staff members as well as the community can drop off  donations at 1600 Hampton St., Suite 403 - Continuing Education and Conferences.  Please drop them off by Wednesday each week.

These are the organizations the program is supporting this summer:

June 7-12: Transitions

The primary goal of Transitions is to move people from homelessness to permanent housing. Various strategies and types of housing are used to help stabilize individuals living on the street and enroll them in services designed to stabilize their lives, increase their income and help them secure permanent housing.

Donations Needed: XL twin sheets, board games, cards, arts & crafts supplies, hand sanitizers, Kleenex, Lysol spray, blankets, chapstick, work gloves, socks, men and women’s clothing, and toiletries.

June 14-19: Carolina Wildlife

Carolina Wildlife is devoted to the rehabilitation of injured and orphaned animals and the preservation of wildlife through education. This organization was founded in 1989 and is now a non-profit organization. They provide increased education about the eco-community of South Carolina and how to care for and protect the wildlife in this state.

Donations Needed: Cheerios, dishwashing liquid, laundry detergent (no scent), laundry bleach, trash bags, facial tissues (lotion free), paper towels, brooms and mops, liquid hand soap, towels, blankets (Fleece), scotch tape, duct tape, post it notes, scissors, latex gloves, scrub brushes, apples, grapes, fruit, baby food, wild bird seed, cat food, peanut butter, acorns, and gift cards to grocery stores, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowe’s or any pet store.

June 21-26: Harvest Hope/Gamecock Pantry

Harvest Hope provides over 200,000 families in central South Carolina with nutritious food and related products. Now serving 20 counties from their headquarters in Columbia and their branch warehouses in Lexington and Florence, they strive to meet the needs of friends and neighbors who are finding themselves at risk of hunger. Through a network of member agencies, dedicated volunteers and staff, they hope to combat hunger in our area. The Gamecock Pantry is the University of South Carolina’s emergency food pantry created for students, by students. The Gamecock Pantry’s goals are to serve the UofSC campus community by providing emergency food aid and to provide resources to enhance the community’s overall well-being.

Donations Needed: Canned meat and fish, peanut butter in plastic jars, canned soups, plastic grocery bags, canned vegetables and fruits, breakfast cereal, personal care items (soap, shampoo & etc) and other non-perishable food items.

July 5-10: Humane Society

The Humane Society is one of many animal welfare groups in the Southeast, all of which play a vital role in addressing the animal welfare issues we face. While the resolution to each of these issues is a worthy endeavor, The Humane Society identifies with only two:  animal cruelty and animal overpopulation. The mistreatment of animals and the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals are unacceptable and must be put to an end.

Donations Needed: Paper towels, laundry detergent, bleach, tall kitchen trash bags, 39 gallon trash bags, hand sanitizers, 1 gallon/1 quart zip lock storage bags, printer paper, towels, blankets, rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, distilled water, stamps, cleaning products, highlighters, file folders, dog/puppy and cat/kitten treats, food and toys.

July 12-17: The Therapy Place

The Therapy Place is the Midlands’ only nonprofit pediatric therapy center. Their aim is to help children experience both firsts and continued milestones.  The vision of The Therapy Place is that all children with special needs will have every opportunity to pursue his or her goals, realize his dreams and reach his full potential, and that every parent or caregiver of those children will be provided with information, resources and encouragement in order to best support his or her child.  The Therapy Place provides traditional and innovative therapies and recreational opportunities for children with special needs in an environment that is family-friendly, and includes resources and education for the parents/caregivers.
