This month marks Internal Audit Awareness Month and UofSC’s Audit & Advisory Services wants to make sure all faculty and staff members know about the resources available on campus. We caught up with Pam Doran, head of the office, to find out for you.

What exactly does USC Audit & Advisory Services do?

Audit & Advisory Services, which reports directly to the Audit and Compliance Committee of the Board of Trustees, provides independent, proactive analyses of operations, financial activities and systems of internal control. We follow a collaborative four-stage engagement process to plan, conduct fieldwork, report and follow up.

Why is this important to the university?

Our services support the university by evaluating whether resources are used efficiently and effectively in keeping with mandated requirements and the university’s mission, goals and objectives. All businesses manage risk. We provide value in assessing and identifying risk and providing advice and recommendations regarding how to manage that risk in support of desired business outcomes.

What does this mean for UofSC faculty and staff?

Our office serves as a resource to the university community, providing objective and independent services. These include business process reviews, risk assessments and fraud investigations. It’s often difficult for departments to assess and improve their services at the same time they are managing day-to-day operations, kind of like trying to fix a car while driving down the road. We can help with that.

What’s the UofSC Integrity Line?

The University of South Carolina has established a 24-hour Integrity Line that enables you to report concerns about questionable or unethical behavior anonymously. This service provides an avenue for faculty and staff members to voice workplace concerns to higher levels of authority. It is best to attempt to address any workplace concerns through your immediate supervisor first. This service is available when discussing with your immediate chain-of-command is not a viable option.
