LGBT Programs in the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs is currently recruiting Safe Zone workshop facilitators for the 2015-2016 academic year. Safe Zone facilitators are faculty, staff and graduate students from across the UofSC campus.

The Safe Zone program seeks to educate the campus community on issues of identity and justice related to the experiences of LGBTQ individuals and engage participants in dialogue around creating safer campus spaces for all. Selected applicants will form a team of committed individuals who will facilitate Safe Zone workshops, act as advocates for the LGBTQ community across campus and help guide the work of the Safe Zone program, including the network of over 700 Safe Zone network members across campus.

In 2014-2015 alone the Safe Zone team facilitated 21 workshops and trained approximately 300 participants. UofSC only hopes to grow those numbers in the upcoming year but we are looking to expand the team of Safe Zone facilitators in order to make this goal a reality. We are looking for facilitators from across academic disciplines who are committed to personal growth and development, as well as being a part of the growth and development of the Safe Zone program.

Safe Zone facilitators fill an invaluable need in our campus community; we are able to educate far more people through a team approach, and the facilitators bring fantastic perspective and energy to the Safe Zone program. Acting as a facilitator is not an entirely unselfish deed though – facilitators also have the opportunity to serve the Carolina community, increase their knowledge around LGBTQ issues, develop skills in social justice dialogue facilitation, and access additional opportunities for professional development.

In terms of time commitment, we will host a day and a half Train the Trainer workshop in late July/early August, as well as monthly professional development sessions of one hour in length. We also expect each team member to facilitate one to two three-hour Safe Zone workshops per semester.

If you are interested in applying to be a Safe Zone facilitator, please apply here.  Applications will be accepted through Friday, May 29 at 5 p.m.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Safe Zone facilitator program, please contact Kayla Lisenby, coordinator for LGBT Programs, at lisenbyk@mailbox.sc.edu or 803-777-4330.
