Dr. Jerry R. Youkey, dean of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine-Greenville, has been appointed associate provost for health sciences-Greenville by President Harris Pastides. The new position underscores the university's commitment to strengthening medical education in the Upstate and recognizes the School of Medicine-Greenville’s efforts to transform the health care delivery system.

Youkey will continue to serve as dean of the medical school, a position he has held since its creation in 2012. As associate provost for health sciences, Youkey will guide Carolina's partnership with Greenville Health System (GHS). Youkey also currently serves as executive vice president of medical and academic affairs at Greenville Health System, the region’s largest health care system.

Youkey joined GHS in 1998. In addition to his academic appointment as professor and dean at the USC School of Medicine-Greenville, he is responsible for the health system’s research and education activities as well as strategic and operational physician initiatives. Prior to joining GHS, Youkey served as chief of the department of surgery and director of the peripheral vascular fellowship program at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. He also served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and was honorably discharged in 1984 with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
