Columbia's Assembly Street Improvement project is one of 10 finalists competing to be called the "Best in America," and online voters have the opportunity to put the Palmetto State ahead of projects in Michigan, Florida, Texas and other states for the People’s Choice Award.

The People’s Choice Award is just one of two national awards sponsored by the American Association of State Highway & Transportation Officials (AASHTO), AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Vote up to 10 times a day per email until Sept. 11.

The winning state will receive funds to support an educational grant in the transportation field, or to fund a community service project selected by the state’s department of transportation.

The $4.5 million Assembly Street project enhanced pedestrian and transit safety with improved sidewalks and transit shelters and was completed more than three months ahead of schedule and $1.5 million under budget.
