President Harris Pastides will join the Southeastern Conference commissioner and two former commissioners participating in the Thomas H. Regan Executive Lecture Series at the University of South Carolina on Sept. 25, marking Carolina’s 25 years in the conference.

Speakers will be SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, former SEC commissioners Mike Slive and Roy Kramer, and Pastides, who also serves as chair of the NCAA Division 1 board of directors. The event will be moderated by Abe Madkour, executive editor at Sports Business Journal/Daily.

The panel discussion will be from 4-5:30 p.m. in the W.W. "Hootie" Johnson Performance Hall in the Darla Moore School of Business. It is sponsored by NASCAR, Gamecock Athletics and the university’s department of sport and entertainment management. The event is free and open to the UofSC community. RSVP by email or phone at (803) 777-6720 by Monday (Sept. 21).

Since its formation in 1933, the SEC has directed and organized interscholastic athletic competitions, conducted tournaments and prescribed eligibility rules for student-athletes. The conference also facilitates and assists its 14 member institutions in maintaining intercollegiate athletic programs compatible with the highest standards of education and competitive sports.

“Being a member of the SEC, the top collegiate athletic conference in the nation, has been a source of pride throughout the USC community,” athletics director Ray Tanner says “We are fortunate to have former SEC Commissioners Roy Kramer and Mike Slive, along with current Commissioner Greg Sankey, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of accepting the league’s invitation to join this great conference.”

Kramer served as SEC commissioner from 1990 to 2002. Credited with creating the Bowl Championship Series (BCS), Kramer welcomed UofSC and the University of Arkansas into the SEC in 1990. His vision to expand the SEC in turn created In SEC football championship game. First played in 1992, the SEC football championship is widely regarded as one of the premier sporting events in college athletics.

Slive became the seventh commissioner of the SEC in 2002, overseeing massive change in the landscape of college athletics, including multimillion-dollar media deals and additional SEC expansion with the addition of Texas A&M and the University of Missouri in 2012.

Sankey, named commissioner in March, continues the leadership and legacy set forth by predecessors Kramer and Slive. He previously served as executive associate commissioner and chief operating officer for the league office since 2012 and before that was associate commissioner since 2002.
