Centenary Plan and Faculty Excellence Initiative
The University had more than 1,950 full-time faculty at its eight campuses in fall 2006, including more than 1,620 in Columbia. In addition, more than 4,500 full-time staff—nearly 4,000 in Columbia—support the University.
South Carolina faculty garnered more than $173 million in federal, state, and private funding for research, outreach, and training programs in 2005-2006. South Carolina is in the process of hiring 100 research-oriented faculty through its Centenary Plan and an additional 150 through the Faculty Excellence Initiative. The FEI will improve professor-to-student ratio and will target, in part, interdisciplinary teaching and research, particularly cluster hiring across academic departments.
Another 350 faculty will be hired to replace retirees, giving the University an infusion of talent and resources over the next five years.
