Leadership Distinction: Community Service

Overview and Requirements

Students graduating from USC Columbia, Lancaster, Salkehatchie, Sumter, or Union may earn Graduation with Leadership Distinction in Community Service.

Students applying to Graduate with Leadership Distinction must

  1. Attend an orientation session — recommended as early as possible (e.g., first or second year), but no later than the semester prior to graduation.
  2. Review the GLD application early (recommended first or second year) and submit the completed application to the Office of USC as required in the graduation semester. Applications must include all required signatures. See application form for further details.
  3. Meet all academic requirements in their pathway for the appropriate degree level (baccalaureate or associate).

Bachelor’s Degree Requirements

Participate

  1. Core Experience
    300 hours community service from at least 2 different programs/experiences (Beyond the classroom experiences that are required in a course including courses satisfying the credit hour course work requirement [#3 below] can count toward core experiences.)

    Contact the Office of Community Service Programs for questions about community service opportunities (SASERVE@sc.edu) or the Office of Student Engagement with questions about community service experiences within courses (saose@mailbox.sc.edu).
     
  2. Enhancement Experiences
    3 different experiences that enhance understanding of community service.

Create

  1. Course work
    6 credit hours coursework from approved list with a grade of B or better

Create and Lead

  1. Publication or Presentation
    Publish in a professional publication (e.g., Caravel) OR

    Present at Discovery Day; a local, state, national, or international professional meeting/conference; or an approved office/department/college presentation experience.
     
  2. E-portfolio
    The e-portfolio can be completed in one of two ways:
  • Workshop training and direct submission to USC Connect OR
  • Successful completion of a credit-bearing course meeting GLD e-portfolio requirements

 

Associate’s Degree Requirements

Participate

    125 hours community service from at least two different programs/experiences
     
  2. Enhancement Experiences
    2 different experiences that enhance understanding of community service

Create

  1. Course work
    3 credit hours coursework from approved list with a grade of B or better

Create and Lead
