ABOUT THE BOOKIn Forces for Change in Contemporary China, twenty-nine leading Chinese studies specialists address the central dilemma facing the People's Republic of Chinathe need for change and the threat such change poses to mainland China's existing institutional power arrangements. Several experts explore the efforts of post-Mao leaders to grapple with the issues of a free market economy and democratic reform while other contributors focus on mainland China's changing relations with Taiwan. Selected from the papers presented at the twentieth-annual Sino-American Conference on Contemporary China, these timely essays probe issues relevant not only to China's political and economic future but to the fate of post-communist regimes throughout Eastern Europe.
