ABOUT THE BOOKAll to One Another collects some of the most compelling recent articles and speeches of Andrew A. Sorensen, twenty-seventh president of the University of South Carolina, on the evolving place of institutions of higher learning at the local and global levels as good stewards of existing resources and as entrepreneurial innovators. Informed by the varied experiences of his distinguished career as a university educator and administrator, Sorensen stresses in this concise volume the importance of building partnerships both on and off campus to foster the vitality of the university; of pursuing new avenues in diversity, technology, and research to secure the investments of a dynamic base of constituents; and of effectively managing the interconnected responsibilities needed more than ever by university leaders. The specific subjects and occasions of these pieces vary greatly—as do the duties and audiences of a modern university president—but these statements are unified by a common vision of empowering hope for our future in the yet-unfulfilled potential of teaching, research, and outreach of higher education. ABOUT THE AUTHORAndrew A. Sorensen was named president of the University of South Carolina in May 2002 after serving as president of the University of Alabama, provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Florida, executive director of the AIDS Institute at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, and dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He has also served as a visiting faculty member at the Harvard University School of Medicine and the University of Cambridge School of Medicine. Author or editor of eight books and more than one hundred articles, Sorensen is a professor of medicine in USC's School of Medicine. He holds a bachelor's degree in ethics and master's and doctoral degrees in medical sociology from Yale University, as well as a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Illinois and a master of public health degree from the University of Michigan.
