Consumerism presentation scheduled for Nov. 7

John de Graaf, founder of the Hazel Wolf Environmental Film Festival and producer of many nationally acclaimed documentaries, will speak and show film clips on "Affluenza: The All-Consuming Epidemic" at 7:30 p.m. in the Gambrell Hall auditorium Nov. 7. The presentation, which is open to the public at no charge, is sponsored by the USC School of the Environment and the South Carolina Sustainable Universities Initiative.

De Graaf will speak about the effectiveness of film as an agent of social change and will also be discussing his recent film and related book. "Affluenza" is a groundbreaking film, narrated by Scott Simon, that diagnoses a social "disease"--caused by consumerism, commercialism and rampant materialism--that is having a devastating impact on families, communities, and the environment. By using personal stories, expert commentary, hilarious old film clips, and "uncommercial" breaks to illuminate the nature and extent of the disease, "Affluenza" appeals to widely diverse audiences.
