Jazz saxophonist returns to Columbia for benefit concert at USC March 7

Columbia native Chris Potter will give a benefit concert March 7 at the Koger Center for the School of Music.

The 7:30 p.m. performance will feature solo and group music by Potter and the Chris Potter Quartet. The program will include selections from Potter's latest CD, Traveling Mercies, and his critically acclaimed 2001 album, Gratitude, which pays tribute to jazz legends that influenced him, such as John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and Joe Henderson.

Tickets are $15 for the general public and $7 for students. Tickets are available at the Coliseum Box Office, all Capital Tickets Outlets, or by calling 251-2222.

After graduating in 1989 from Dreher High School, where he played the alto, tenor, and soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, and flute, Potter enrolled at the Manhattan School in New York and performed with legendary trumpeter Red Rodney. He quickly became one of the most sought after saxophonists in New York for touring and recording and has worked regularly with Dave Holland, Paul Motian, the Mingus Big Band, and the pop band, Steely Dan.

At 29, Potter's accomplishments are significant. Often referred to as "the finest saxophonist of his generation" by critics, musicians, and fans, Potter is the youngest musician ever to receive the Danish Jazzpar Prize, and he was nominated for a Grammy for his solo work on Joanne Brackeen's Pink Elephant Magic. His work on the Steely Dan's gold-record CD, Two Against Nature, helped earn two Grammy nominations. Last year, Potter was a double winner in Down Beat magazine’s International Critics Poll as a tenor and soprano saxophonist.
