Palmetto Concert Band to give free concert Memorial Day

The Palmetto Concert Band will present a concert Memorial Day to honor to honor the U.S. armed forces, especially service men and women who sacrificed their lives in defense of their country.

The free concert will be at 4 p.m. May 25 in the Koger Center. James K. Copenhaver and William J. Moody will be co-conductors.

The program will include works familiar to all ages. Clifford Leaman, an associate professor of saxophone in the School of Music, will be the soloist. He will perform the gypsy melody, "Czardas," in an arrangement by the Russian composer Monti.

The Palmetto Concert Band organized in January 1999 to perform at the USC Concert Band Clinic. The volunteer ensemble is made up of professional and semiprofessional musicians from throughout South Carolina with a few members from North Carolina and Georgia.

Many members are alumni of the School of Music, and more than half of the members are public school band directors.

USC Bands and the City of Columbia are co-sponsors of the concert.
