Skvoretz named interim dean of College of Liberal Arts

John Skvoretz has been named interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts.

Skvoretz, who has served as associate dean of the college since 2002, succeeds Joan Stewart, who is leaving to become president of Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y.

Skvoretz joined USC’s sociology department in 1975 as an instructor and, after moving up the ranks, was named a full professor in 1986. He has earned numerous honors, including a Carolina Distinguished Professorship of Sociology and a USC Educational Foundation Award for Research in Humanities and Social Sciences.

Nationally known for his research and work in social structure and networks, Skvoretz has edited two books and written extensively on those and other topics, including articles, papers and book chapters. He is a member of the Sociological Research Association and associate editor of the Journal of Mathematical Sociology and a former consulting editor of the American Journal of Sociology.

Skvoretz earned bachelor’s degrees in sociology and math from Lehigh University and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Pittsburgh.

He will begin on July 1.
