USC creates chemicals recycling program

The University’s Environmental Health and Safety Program has launched a surplus chemicals recycling program that is free to the USC community. As part of the recycling program, Environmental Health and Safety is also urging faculty to adopt a chemical waste minimization program through the catch phrase of “Less is Better!”

A campus mailer distributed in late July details specifics of the plan, which is designed to help the University reduce its costs for disposing of hazardous wastes. A large amount of unused chemicals could be used in other campus labs. The recycling program establishes a clearinghouse that assists faculty members who want to participate in the surplus chemical exchange program with minimal effort.

For a copy of the program’s guidelines, to be included in the Surplus Chemical Exchange Program database, or for additional information, contact Muthukrishna Raja at 7-5269 or Hazwaste@gwm.sc.edu. Learn more about the program at http://ehs.sc.edu/.
