USC faculty and their research teams achieved a record total of $130.8 million in sponsored program and research awards during 200203, a 20 percent increase compared to the previous fiscal year.
Health science colleges, science and mathematics, engineering and information technology, and liberal arts led USC Columbia in sponsored program and research awards. In addition, faculty at USCs regional and senior campuses garnered 75 percent more research funding than the previous year.
USC faculty, staff, and students did a great job this year with funding from the National Institutes of Health, one of the most competitive federal research agencies, increased by 66 percent, and Department of Defense funding rose by 59 percent, said Tony Boccanfuso, managing director of USCs Research Foundation and director of the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research.
Also, awards from business and industry increased by 25 percent.
USC researchers also set a record in requesting $244 million for future research proposals, a 39 percent increase above last years total. The amount requested is potentially significant because it could portend further increases in research funding.
