"Remember—Celebrate—Act:
A Day On, Not a Day Off"

USC will commemorate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a number of planned events on the Columbia campus Jan. 16 and 19. The events mark the 21st consecutive year the University has held a formal program to pay tribute to the late civil rights leader.

King Day activities will begin with a commemorative breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 16 in the Russell House ballroom. Featured speaker will be Patricia Sullivan, faculty member in the USC Department of History and a noted civil rights historian. This event is open to all faculty, staff, and students, and the cost of the breakfast is $6 per person. Tickets for the breakfast go on sale Dec. 5 at the Russell House Information Desk.

The University will continue its celebration Jan. 19 with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service event sponsored by the Office of Community Services and the Department of Student Life. A week of educational events will lead up to the MLK Day of Service.

Service Day activities begin with registration from 9:30–10:30 a.m., followed by a rally at 10:30 a.m. All faculty, staff, and students are urged to participate in the Service Day activities from 11:30 a.m.–3 p.m. by volunteering their time in service to some community service organization in the greater Columbia community.

At 3 p.m. Jan.19, the USC Black Law Students Association will sponsor a program at the USC Law School auditorium. Lonnie Randolph, president of the SC NAACP, will speak on "Dr. King’s Dream–Unfinished Business."

At 6:30 p.m. Jan. 19, the Koger Center will come alive with the sound of gospel music as the annual MLK Gospel Unity Fest honors King's life and legacy. The renowned Jarvis Brothers will be this year's featured performers. Also, several local gospel groups and two USC-based gospel groups will perform. Charles B. Jackson Jr., pastor of Brookland Baptist Church, also will speak.
