| Literary scholars from around the world will spend three days in Beaufort this month discussing contemporary Southern writers for Reading Todays Southern Writers, a lecture series sponsored by USC Beaufort, Beaufort County Libraries, and the S.C. Humanities Council.
The lecture series, which is free, will take place Jan. 2124 in Beaufort.
The scholarssome coming from as far away as Germany and Denmarkwill focus on a book from one of 14 selected Southern authors. Additionally, native South Carolinian and University of North Carolina Chapel Hill professor Pam Durban will read from her book So Far Back.

- Jan. 23, 11 a.m.12:30 p.m., Suzanne Jones, Richmond University, on A Visitation of Spirits by Randall Kenan, and Charles Israel, Columbia College, on One Foot in Eden by Ron Rash; 24 p.m., Jan Nordby Gretlund, University of Southern Denmark, on So Far Back by Pam Durban, and Pam Durban will read from her work; 78:30 p.m., Robert H. - Jan. 24, 11 a.m.12:30 p.m., Lila N. Meeks, USC Beaufort, on Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison, and Michael Kreyling, Vanderbilt University, on All Over but the Shouting by Rick Bragg.
Most lectures are an hour and a half long and include two speakers. A question-and-answer session will follow each speaker.
All but one of the lectures will take place in USC Beauforts Performing Arts Center. The Jan. 23 lecture scheduled for 24 p.m. featuring Pam Durban and her work will take place at the Beaufort County Librarys downtown location.
Lecture attendees are encouraged to read the featured books and join in the discussions. Copies of the books are available at USC Beaufort libraries and county libraries. Books also can be purchased at USC Beauforts University Bookstore or other area bookstores.
