Four USC faculty members have been named associate provosts, filling positions vacated this past summer. In announcing the appointments, Provost Mark Becker also redirected some work responsibilities for two of the positions.
Karl G. Heider, a Carolina Distinguished Professor in anthropology, is associate provost and dean of undergraduate studies. He had held the position in an interim capacity since early summer.
Christine Ebert, professor of science education in the College of Education and a principal in the development of the GK-12 Fellows Program, is associate provost for institutional outreach and dean of the Graduate School; she, too, had held the position as an interim. Eberts new duties for institutional outreach include facilitating the coordination and advancement of the Universitys academic outreach activities.
William T. Moore, the David and Esther Berlinberg Distinguished Professor of Finance and executive editor of The Journal of Financial Research, is associate provost for budget and operations.
Gordon C. Baylis, professor of cognitive neuroscience and a member of the MUSC Center for Advanced Imaging Research, is associate provost for academic initiatives. This is a new position in the provosts office that will focus on assuring that new programs, especially the Faculty Excellence Initiative to appoint 150 new faculty members, achieve maximum success in advancing excellence in the Universitys education and research programs.
Moore and Baylis assumed their responsibilities Oct. 18.
The previous associate provosts in this office served long and productive tenures and built a solid foundation for their successors, said Provost Becker. This new team of associates brings considerable energy, enthusiasm, institutional commitment, and creativity to my office, as well as a thorough understanding of USCs culture and potential for excellence and academic leadership.
