Joseph T. DiPiro has been named the first dean of the merged pharmacy schools of USC and the Medical University of South Carolina.
As executive dean of the program, DiPiro, who currently is an assistant dean of the University of Georgia's College of Pharmacy in Athens and an assistant dean at the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine in Augusta, will have offices on both campuses and report to the presidents of both institutions.
The universities proposed combining their pharmacy schools last year in a move expected to save about $2 million a year. The integrated program will likely be named the South Carolina College of Pharmacy.
DiPiro's work at the two Georgia institutions make him an excellent choice for the new position, USC President Andrew A. Sorensen and MUSC President Ray Greenberg said.
