The USC campus in Columbia will go "wireless" March 1 when access to a new outdoor wireless network becomes available for faculty, staff, and students.
With a laptop configured to the USC Wireless Network, computer users will have the ability to browse the Internet and go online in most outdoor areas on campus.
Phase I will be activated March 1. Phase I includes most of the common areas on campus, including the USC Horseshoe, outside areas around Thomas Cooper Library and the Russell House, along with areas outside many residence halls.
Phase II should be available by the end of the Spring 2005 semester.
The new wireless network will replace the existing outdoor wireless network that was in place prior to the Spring 2005 semester. However, this outdoor wireless network is not replacing networks within Thomas Cooper Library, the Law Center, and other college and departmental networks. This is just for outdoor use only, at this time, and should not be considered a replacement for wired access.
There are a few steps to complete before participants can connect to the outdoor wireless network. For instructions, go to http://csd.sc.edu/wireless.
Computer Services is providing training and support for students, faculty, and staff. Attending the wireless workshops being offered this spring is strongly recommended; attendees will receive hands-on asisstance and the software needed to connect to the wireless network. Faculty and staff should contact their network administrator for assistance in connecting to the wireless network.
For more information about wireless at USC, contact the Computer Services Public Relations Office at 7-7474 or CSDPR@gwm.sc.edu. Contact the CS Help Desk at 7-1800 for questions related to wireless network connections.
