USC Aiken presents concert of Brahms' works April 23

The Masterworks Chorale and the University Concert Choir of USC Aiken, accompanied by members of the Augusta Symphony, will perform A German Requiem by Johannes Brahms at 8 p.m. April 23 on the main stage of the Etherredge Center.
Jacob Will

Soloists will be baritone Jacob Will and soprano Martha Zakkary.

A German Requiem is one of the unmistakable monuments of western music and one of the most performed of all choral/orchestral works throughout the world.

Martha Zakkery
Although the deaths of Brahms' mother and his good friend Robert Schumann motivated Brahms to compose Requiem, it is not a traditional requiem for the dead. Instead, the work is one of consolation for the living. Throughout the work, Brahms artistically confronts the issue of death while creating a work that transcends any specific belief system.

Tickets to the concert are $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens (62 and over), and $7 for students. To purchase, call the Etherredge Center box office at 803-641-3305.
