Deputy Treasury secretary to speak at USC Aiken April 11

Arnie Havens, acting deputy secretary of the United States Treasury, will speak at USC Aiken April 11. Havens’ address will take place at 4 p.m. in the Etherredge Center. The topics of his address include corporate responsibility, business ethics, and current social security proposals.

The speech is open to the public. USC Aiken School of Business Administration is sponsoring Havens’ visit. For more information, call 56-3340.

Before Havens’ recent appointment, he served as general counsel of the Department of the Treasury. A public policy veteran with nearly 30 years of experience in both the public and private sectors, Havens previously served as senior vice president of government affairs for CSX Corporation. Before joining CSX, he was president of the Havens Group Inc., where he represented clients before the Congress and the executive branch on issues including transportation, the environment, and health care reform.

Beyond his private sector experience, Havens has an extensive legislative background having served as minority counsel and staff director on the Committee on Energy and Commerce of the U.S. House of Representatives. In addition, he was special assistant to the president for legislative affairs. Between 1991 and 1993, Havens represented President George H.W. Bush before the Congress on issues of concern to the president and his administration with a focus on communications, energy, the environment, financial institutions, regulatory reform, and transportation.

A graduate of the University of Illinois, Havens earned a bachelor’s degree in history and a Juris Doctor. In addition to his speech at USC Aiken, Havens will visit the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce and Aiken Rotary Club on April 11.
