An exhibition of ceramic sculptures that reflect the monumental savagery and mechanisms of ethnic cleansing will be on display at McMaster Gallery June 130.
An opening reception for "Roy Strassberg: Holocaust Bone Structures" will take place from 57 p.m. June 1. The event is free and open to the public.
"These works functioned as a resource for me to reconnect to a cultural heritage from which I felt physically disconnected," said Strassberg, a professor of art and chair of the art department at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Strassberg has said he feels a responsibility to use his art to practice "tikkum olam" (Hebrew for "mend the world").
Prior to coming to UNC, Strassberg served as chair for the department of art at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He received a B.A. in art from the State University of New York at Oswego and an M.F.A. degree in ceramics from the University of Michigan. He has exhibited extensively at the national level and has work in a number of public collections.
McMaster Gallery is located in the USC Department of Art at 1615 Senate Street in downtown Columbia. Gallery summer hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The gallery is free and open to the public.
