The Folklife Resource Center at USC's McKissick Museum has released a CD of gospel, work songs, blues, and Gullah spirituals.
Feel the Presence: Traditional African American Music in South Carolina can be purchased through the museum for $5. To order a copy, contact Barbara Griggs at 7-6403 or barbarag@gwm.sc.edu.
Many of the musicians featured on the CD are recipients of The Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award, a state award that is presented annually to artists who demonstrate a commitment to the state's traditional arts, including folk music.
The CD is the second in the museum's traditional music series, called "Considerable Grace Traditional Music." The "Considerable Grace" series brings attention to the state's musical heritage and to the various cultures that practice these traditional forms of music. The first volume, a tremendous success, was titled Considerable Grace: Music of the Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Awards.
Music from Feel the Presence will be incorporated on the McKissick Web site, and educators in K12 and college will be able to get copies on a loan basis. For more information about the "Considerable Grace Traditional Music" series, contact Saddler Taylor at taylors7@gwm.sc.edu or go to www.cas.sc.edu/mcks/.
