An exhibit of original engravings created by English poet and artist William Blake will be on display in the Mezzanine Gallery at Thomas Cooper Library July 1-Sept. 1.
"William Blake: Visionary & Illustrator" is free and open to the public.
The exhibit includes more than 40 books that feature engravings by Blake, including a newly acquired leaf from Blake's Book of Job.
The black-and-white illustration at right--drawn by Blake--is an example of the items in the exhibit. This illustration appeared in William Hayley's The Triumph of Temper: A Poem, In Six Cantos. The book was published in London in 1803 by T.Cadell and W. Davies.
The picture, above right, fits the first lines of the poem well:
"The mind's soft guardian, who, tho' yet unsung,
Inspires with harmony the female tongue,
And gives, improving every tender grace,
The smile of angels to a mortal face..."
"The Ancient of Days" illustration, below right, is also by Blake and is the frontispiece to his Europe (1794).
