Southern Graphics Council print exhibition on display at USC Beaufort through Sept. 25

The Southern Graphics Council 2006-2009 Traveling Print Exhibition is on display at the USC Beaufort North Campus Performing Arts Center through Sept. 25.

The exhibition, which will tour for three years, features the work of Southern Graphic Council (SGC) members, an organization begun in the 1970s by USC art professor Boyd Saunders. Thirty-three works--selected from 89 submitted by SGC members--are featured.

The opening reception for the exhibition is 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 7 at the USC Beaufort Performing Arts Center Gallery, 801 Carteret Street, Beaufort.

"All the pieces were strong," said USC Beaufort Associate Professor of Art History Efram Burk, juror for the exhibition. "The ones I selected are all powerful works, aesthetically compelling and reflective of the conditions and complexities of the world we live in. Altogether, I feel this exhibition speaks to the depth and extent of current graphics."

Curator for the exhibit is Roger L. Steele, SGC board member at large and USC Beaufort adjunct art professor.

"The works in this show were garnered from the members of this international organization of printmakers," he said. "The works are perfect examples of the current trends in this field, some using traditional etching, lithography, and wood cut, and some using the newest technological advances of computer and digital processes being practiced in studios and taught in the major universities across the United States."
