Summer vacation 2006

Many thanks go to all those USC faculty and staff members who shared their summer memories with TIMES, including:

"We spent most of our time in Kitale, Kenya. We did something different every day: feeding hungry street kids, teaching solar cooking classes, taking food and educational supplies to an orphanage, building desks for a school, handing out mosquito nets, visiting Kakuma Refugee Camp in Northern Kenya, and building the steel framework of a school. Before we left, we stopped by Nakuru National Park and went on a photo safari." -- Becky Wilson, University Instructional Services, who went to Kenya with her sister and a large group of people from Lake Forest, California.

"...we had no idea what to expect. The only
thing I knew was T.E. Lawrence's
connection to Wadi Rum from The Seven
Pillars of Wisdom,
a favorite book of mine
in my youth. We were in for a wonderful
surprise...Walking through the long narrow
gorge known as As-Siq that leads to Petra,
we joined a crowd made up of tourists from
all over the world, young bedouin boys riding
donkeys and horses, other bedouins driving
carriages with tourists, gypsy-like Bedouins
selling silver jewelry and other souvenirs. It
was like being part of a colorful parade..."
--Becky Lewis, Academic Credit Programs,
Regional Campuses and Continuing
Education
, who went to the ancient cities of
Petra and Wadi Rum while she was a senior
Fulbright lecturer in the English department
at the University of Jordan in Amman.
