Dig it! October is S.C. Archaeology Month

The S.C. Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology (SCIAA) at USC is celebrating S.C. Archaeology Month with more than 60 events statewide, culminating with Archaeology Field Day Nov. 4 at Santee State Park.

Throughout October, more than 50 organizations will sponsor events for the 15th-annual S.C. Archaeology Month at museums, state parks, plantations, historic sites, and libraries, all centered around this year's theme, "Celebrating Barbados--South Carolina Connections."

The events are intended to share the state's archaeology heritage with the public and to help preserve the state's African and European heritages.

A complete listing of events is available at www.cas.sc.edu/sciaa/.

The finale, South Carolina Archaeology Field Day, will take place at Santee State Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 4. Admission is $6 for adults and $2 for children, which includes admission to the state park. "Primitive technologies" is the theme for the activities, exhibits, and talks. Participants will meet archaeologists and learn about flint-knapping, quill and leatherwork, blowguns, and how early people made stone tools and containers. Pottery, including Catawba ceramic work, also will be exhibited.

The Archaeological Society of South Carolina in cooperation with SCIAA sponsors the annual field day.
