The USC NanoCenter and Benedict College will offer the spring S.C. Citizens' School of Nanotechnology beginning at 6:30 p.m., March 7 on the Benedict College campus.

The sessions for adults will meet on eight consecutive Wednesday evenings through April 25 at 6:30 p.m. All sessions will meet in the N.A. Jenkins Board Room in the Benjamin F. Payton Learning Resource Center in the heart of the Benedict College campus.

The cost is $30 for the entire eight sessions.
Nanotechnology is an important family of technologies that study and manipulate matter measured in nanometers. A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter.

The school is a consumer-friendly outreach program in which Benedict and USC faculty, in disciplines ranging from chemistry to philosophy, introduce nanotechnology to non-experts. The school features a series of background readings, presentations and two-way discussions.

Participants will receive a package of very readable articles to accompany each session.

Among the topics of special concern to many people are nanomedicine, with its promises of fighting cancer, and the environmental implications of nanotechnology, including both risks and remediation. Each of these topics will have a presentation with supporting reading material, as will nanotech in science fiction.

Participants do not need to have expertise in science or engineering. The school is for people who are curious about nanotech and want a general introduction. Participants can receive 1.2 continuing education unit credits for an additional cost of $10.
