Independent review: As You Like It

Richmond turns over a new leaf with "Shakespeare: The Musical"

By Francee Levin, Special to TIMES Online

Robert Richmond, associate director of Aquila Theatre and guest director and choreographer of Theatre South Carolina's current production of Shakespeare's As You Like It, has created a masterpiece. Set in a framework of old books, this production uses Celtic music, Irish step dancing, incredible effects, political and artistic overtones, and more to create one of the most unusual and memorable evenings of theatre that I have ever seen. In short, I didn't just like this version of As You Like It--I loved it!

A few of the highlights include a raked stage that becomes an old book, the Forest of Arden with pages of books for leaves on the trees, thought-provoking analogies on intellectual and artistic freedom, flying books, and wrestling choreographed to almost resemble a ballet. If it sounds different, it is. This show is not only the highlight of a very good season at Theatre South Carolina; it is one of the best productions ever seen in Columbia or anywhere else. Ovations go to everyone involved.

The cast, most of whom play multiple roles, all deliver excellent performances. Daryl Ball's Orlando and Jennifer Fine and Jennifer Burry as Rosalind and Celia are standouts, but all the actors are wonderful.

The memorable and familiar lines, from "All the world's a stage..." on, are delivered simply, effectively, and meaningfully. There is no posturing here. Everything is played for laughs. No joke or pun is overlooked. But there is a multilayered subtext and so much to see and hear and think about that I could see this production again and again, trying to catch everything I might have missed.

Then there is the amazing set design by Craig Vetter with incredible lighting by Ian DelDuca, Witty costumes designed by Angelina Herin. And highlights ranging from baaing sheep to professional wrestling. You don't have to enjoy Shakespeare or even theatre to like As You Like It. It truly has something for everyone. It's bawdy, gaudy, broad, sexy, rollicking, rip-roaring comedy. The only tragedy would be missing it.

When word gets out, this should be the hottest ticket in town, so take a page from the play, and book your tickets now! As You Like It is playing at Drayton Hall Theater through April 29. Call 7-2551 for reservations.
