The 7:30 p.m. lecture in the Lumpkin Auditorium in the B.A. Building will feature Barry S. Coller, physician-in-chief of Rockefeller University Hospital and head of the university's Laboratory of Blood and Vascular Biology. His address, "Responsible Biomedical Science in the 21st Century: The Role of the Physician's Oath," will be followed by a question-and-answer session.
Coller was elected in 1999 to the Institute of Medicine and in 2003 to the National Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on plasma protein associated with heart attacks and strokes. He has embarked on studies using robotic screening of chemical libraries to look for new therapeutic agents.
The Caskey Lecture was established in 2004 by C. Thomas Caskey, a South Carolina native and graduate of the University, to provide a public forum to address issues on the 21st century impact of biotechnology on medicine. Caskey is chief executive officer and president of Cogene Biotech Ventures Ltd. He also is an adjunct professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
