Clay sculpture on display at McMaster Gallery Sept. 25-Oct. 25

An exhibit of clay sculpture by Aiken artist Tom Supensky will be on exhibit Sept. 25-Oct. 25 at McMaster Gallery in the University's Department of Art. Opening reception for the exhibit will be 5-7 p.m. Sept. 25. The public is invited.

"Suggesting Reality" is an exhibition of whimsical ceramic sculptures. A trained potter, Supensky redefines clay, manipulating the medium into scenes that combine small animals and trivial man-made objects into visual puns.

Supensky is a professor emeritus of art at Towson University in Maryland. After 35 years of teaching, he retired to Aiken with his wife, Pauline. He continues his ceramic sculpture at his home studio there.

Supensky has exhibited throughout America as well as in numerous countries including England, Germany, Italy, Australia, and Korea. He has done workshops and lectures nationally and internationally. He has written articles for such publications as Ceramics Monthly, Ceramics: Art and Perception and Ceramics Technical. His work has been published in a variety of magazines and books, including The Craft and Art of Clay and Working With Clay by Susan Peterson; Ceramics Viva by Nino Caruso; and Low Fire, Other Ways to Work in Clay by Leon Nigrosh.

Supensky taught three years in England, two years in Germany, and a semester in Italy. He was artist-in-residence at the University of Tasmania in Australia and will be returning again in April 2008. For more information, go to www.tomsupensky.com.

Exhibits in McMaster Gallery, located at 1615 Senate Street, are free and open to the public. Visitors should enter through the Senate Street entrance. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays, 1-4 p.m. Sundays, closed Saturdays and all University holidays.

For more information, contact Mana Hewitt, gallery director, at 7-7480, or e-mail mana@sc.edu.
