So you think you can dance? The University's dance students know they can dance, and they will have the opportunity to prove it in We Know We Can Dance, an eclectic showcase of the students' own choreographies.
The show will allow the students in the dance program to take control of the stage by performing in works completely choreographed, designed, and directed by their peers. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 29 through Dec. 1 at the Drayton Hall theater. Tickets are $16 for the public; $14 for faculty, staff, and military; and $10 for students and are available by calling 7-5112 or 251-2222 for credit card purchases.
The production will feature seven student choreographers and two guest choreographers, Dale Lam and Steven Ferguson; Cindy Flach, a member of the dance faculty, is the director. The choreographers have created a varied program that includes jazz, tap, musical theatre, contemporary dance, and West African pieces.
"This concert gives students who are not ready for or interested in professional-level ballet a chance to work on their choreography and performance skills in their areas of interest," Flach said.
The production also allows student choreographers to translate their visions from their imaginations to the stage, while also learning the essential professional skills.
"It has been a great opportunity to work with so many gifted artists," Carolyn Bolton, a junior dance performance student, said. "I am so happy and privileged to have such talented individuals make my vision a reality. This is truly a wonderful experience to transition from performer to creator."
Lam is the artistic director of the Columbia City Jazz Company and a member of the dance faculty at Carolina. She also is an in-demand jazz choreographer and master instructor. She is formally trained in dance, acting, piano, cello, and voice.
Ferguson is a Carolina alumnus, who is a professional choreographer and dancer in the Columbia area.
Flach is a nationally known choreographer of stage musicals. She has more than 125 stage musicals to her choreographic credit and has been a member of the dance faculty since 1988.
