In Memoriam: Tom Price

Thomas Hart "Tom" Price, 81, the University's sports information director for 30 years, died Feb. 1 in Columbia after suffering a stroke Jan. 28.

Price graduated from the University with a degree in journalism in 1951 after service in the U.S. Navy as a signalman during World War II.

He was South Carolina bureau chief for United Press International for 11 years before joining the University as sports information director from 1962 through 1985, assistant athletics director for media relations from 1985 through 1992, and consultant and athletic historian since his retirement in 1992.

Price was a recipient of the Wilber Snypp Award for contributions to college baseball, a lifetime member of the USC Letterman's Association, the USC Athletic Hall of Fame, and the College Sports Information Directors Association Hall of Fame.

In 1984, he was selected by the International Olympics Committee as the official scorer for baseball in the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Price is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret Fletcher Price; son, Thomas A. Price; daughter, Dr. Melissa Lee Price; son, Richard F. Price; granddaughters; a grandson; and great grandson.

Services were held Feb. 4 at Dunbar Funeral Home on Devine Street in Columbia with burial in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens.
