Chancellor Jane Upshaw at USC Beaufort has been named Zonta's 2007 Woman of the Year.
Upshaw was recognized for her community service. She is a past president of Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry and the past chair of the Hilton Head Island/Bluffton Chamber of Commerce. She sits on the governing boards of the Coastal Business Education Technology Alliance, Hilton Head Regional Medical Center, and the National Bank of South Carolina.
Lynn McGee, Beaufort's vice chancellor for University Advancement, commented on the chancellor's impact on the communities served by the Beaufort campus.
"Dr. Upshaw has made a difference in our community by focusing her personal and professional efforts on a critical need: educational opportunity," she said. "Dr. Upshaw invested countless hours traveling across the state to bring a baccalaureate degree granting institution to the Lowcountry. Her hard work, visionary leadership, belief in the Lowcountry's strengths, and willingness to take risks have been a critical force behind the building of a four year university for an underserved region of the state."
Upshaw has been a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) since 2004 and was chair of the Women Presidents Group from 2005 to 2007. She recently was appointed to the AASCU Professional Development Committee. She also was on the Auburn University Alumni Association Board from 2004 to 2007. She is a member of the Mathematical Association of America and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
