Web Presence Template Compliance
Since the debut of the University's redesigned Web portal page in May 2002, much progress has been made in coordinating the look and feel of the University's Web presence. To date, nearly 100 sites have been reconstructed using the new Web presence html template system. The template design has proven to be a useful and viable solution in branding USC's online image while allowing academic and administrative areas flexibility in presenting their own distinctive visual identities.
Creating a more uniform Web presence is critically important as the Web has become the front door for many of the University's constituencies. Hundreds of thousands of visitors make their first impressions of USC based on the University's primary Web pages. Therefore, it is key for the University to provide accurate, up to date, and vibrant information that is easily navigated among all USC Web sites.
To continue the momentum of converting University sites to the new Web presence templates, it is imperative that all USC official Web sites—particularly those of major academic programs—move quickly towards compliance with the posted Web presence guidelines. To promote and ensure this initiative, I am directing that all areas take immediate steps to bring appropriate University Web sites into full compliance. Site migration plans should be in place by January 15, 2004, and full implementation of that plan should be accomplished by April 15, 2004.
Web presence guidelines can be found at www.sc.edu/webpresence. The site is comprised of three main areas: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), Visual Style Guide, and Step-By-Step Guide, and also includes a Template Request Form. A Style Gallery showing examples of how the template can be used is available at www.sc.edu/webpresence/style_gallery/index.html.
The University's Web Presence Team is available to consult with your IT staff in developing organizational, navigational, and visual approaches for your area's Web presence. They can be reached at webpresence@sc.edu and would be pleased to set up an appointment to meet and discuss your site.
Your cooperation and participation in this project is much appreciated and will allow the University to take the next major step in presenting a unified and identifiable image to prospective students, alumni, business leaders, academic colleagues, and indeed, all users of the global Internet.
