The template system was created to give Web designers a number of options in the presentation of their pages. There are two template types, "Basic" and "Tool-tip," which refer to options in the Content Area. There are two template versions, "Graphics" and "Text," which refer to the way the pages are constructed. And there are three template styles, "Solid Nav," "Split Nav," and "Fade Nav," which refer to the presentation of the Left Navigation Bar. These options are outlined below and illustrated on the right. Click on the image to view the graphics version of each style at actual size.
TEMPLATE TYPES (Basic and Tool-tip)
Basic refers to the skeleton Web page contained in the folder that designers may use to build pages that are basically navigation and text only, with no photos or Tool-Tip Bars. The basic template page is similar to the page you see when you click on the Site Information button at the bottom of this page.
Tool-tip refers to the skeleton Web page contained in the folder that is the standard page design for the original template package, with space for photos and tool-tips as well as text and additional graphics. The Tool-Tip should provide readers with a brief explanation of, or additional information about, the selected menu item. If tool-tips are just a repetition of the menu item, they are not necessary and should not be used.
TEMPLATE VERSIONS (Graphics and Text)
The graphics-based version is for Web designers who prefer to create art files for labels and menu items so that font characteristics and page layout remain consistent no matter which browser or monitor settings the end viewer uses. There are editable art files supplied in the Photoshop folder for these labels, as well as files needed to create the Header Page Titles.
The text-based version is for designers who prefer a page that will download as fast as possible and allow the text in a page to be enlarged or reduced in the viewer's browser settings. Designers using the text-based version will still need to edit the Header Page Title art files found in the Photoshop folder.
TEMPLATE STYLES (Solid Nav, Split Nav and Fade Nav)
The Solid Nav Template uses a solid color LNAV with white menu items in a continuous list. This Style Guide site is created with Solid Nav template style, but uses color to distinguish different link categories by using white text for Style Guide links and yellow for related links.
The Split Nav Template divides or splits the LNAV into two distinct color areas. Use this template when your navigation items divide logically into different types or categories of links. Many of the University's main Web pages use this style and divide their menu items by placing academic and administrative links in the garnet area above the black bar and related links in the gray area below.
The Fade Nav Template is a modification of the Solid Nav Template and was introduced to the main portal pages in December 2005. It was made available for public use in February 2006, but is optional, not required. It uses a gradient effect that creates a transition from a solid color to white.
FLYOUT TEMPLATE
The Flyout Template is no longer supported and is not available for future use.
