Always Coming Home

Always Coming Home: South Carolina Women Veterans is a multimedia exploration and documentation of the South Carolina female military personnel experience, both during and after service.

This website, created in 2010, through the assistance of the University of South Carolina, is part of a larger project designed to provide ongoing documentation of the diverse combat and service situations South Carolina women in the military face as well as recording the experiences of the increasing numbers of female veterans whose return to civilian life in South Carolina has been affected by their years of service.

Our 29 minute video "Soldier Girl: South Carolina Veterans" is structured to suggest the diverse motives of women entering the service, the experiences that these women have while deployed, and the opportunities and setbacks they face upon return to civilian life. Short interviews are interspersed with archival photos. The video is meant for mature audiences only.

Cathy Brookshire sat down with Discover Carolina to talk about her documentary film, "Soldier Girl," which was screened as part of Indie Grits.
