Adventures in Mastering Education - Art of the Teacher's Toolbox

This immersive weeklong summer camp is designed for high school students passionate about education and eager to explore the dynamic world of teaching. Participants will engage in a variety of hands-on activities and workshops to gain valuable insights into the teaching profession.

Key activities and experiences:
  • Classroom Simulations: Participants will take on the role of teachers, leading lessons, managing classroom dynamics, and developing engaging activities.
  • Curriculum Development: Students will work collaboratively to design lesson plans, create educational materials, and assess student learning.
  • Educational Technology: Explore innovative teaching tools and technologies to enhance classroom instruction and student engagement.
  • Guest Speaker Series: Hear from experienced educators, school administrators, and educational professionals who will share their expertise and advice.
Learning outcomes:

By the end of the camp, participants will:

Meet Your Instructor


Janice Baines

Janice Baines is a Clinical Instructor at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. She holds a B.A. from Benedict College, an M.Ed. from the University of Wisconsin, and is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of South Carolina. Her research and teaching focus on Teaching and Learning: Liberatory education using African Diaspora Literacy, Black Feminist Thought, and Culturally Relevant Pedagogy. 

Baines is the co-author of We’ve Been Doing it Your Way Long Enough: Choosing the Culturally Relevant Classroom and has contributed to numerous articles and books. She has a long-standing relationship with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), having presented at various conferences, served on the NCTE Research Foundation, and received the Early Career Educator of Color Leadership award in 2011. Her work has inspired initiatives such as NCTE’s Professional Dyads and Culturally Relevant Teaching.

In addition to her work with NCTE, Baines has presented at the Multicultural Education Conference (MEC), Sankofa, and the Institute for the Study of the African American Child (ISAAC). She has also served as a Blind Assessor for EDUCARE at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a four-time participant in Fulbright-Hays Group Projects.
