The First-Generation Center (FGC) supports first-generation students’ personal, academic, and professional growth by providing resources, guidance, and mentorship. The First-Gen Mentor Program connects first-gen students with first-gen faculty, staff, and students while the First-Generation Living and Learning Community (LLC) provides an inclusive space that helps first-gen students build a meaningful support system. Through such partnerships and programming, the FGC empowers students to thrive, celebrating their unique strengths and helping them reach their potential at USC and beyond.
In your role as an educator, the FGC offers resources to help you make a positive impact on our first-gen students. The FGC launched the First-Gen Module, “Supporting First-Generation College Students: Best Practices for Engaging Faculty & Staff." Created by First-Gen Forward, this self-paced, 60-minute module offers a comprehensive overview of the first-generation student experience along with practical strategies for faculty and staff to support these students both individually and institutionally.
The FGC invites all USC faculty and staff to complete the module, as first-generation students make up 20% of our student body and benefit greatly from our collective support. Participants who complete the module also have the option to be featured in monthly campus newsletters and on the First-Generation Center’s Instagram page as a way to showcase their commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive campus.
Once you complete the First-Gen Module, be sure to fill out the form to notify the FGC. Explore the FGC’s faculty and staff training page to see USC colleagues who have completed the module. You can also sign up to become a first-gen mentor and help create a welcoming environment that empowers first-gen students to thrive at USC.
