Generative AI is reshaping higher education, and the Center for Teaching Excellence has released new Guiding Principles for AI Use in Teaching to help educators navigate this evolving landscape with confidence and clarity. The guidelines provide practical direction for integrating AI in ways that strengthen teaching, maintain academic integrity, and encourage responsible innovation. Developed in alignment with recommendations from the Provost’s AI Task Force, the principles reflect USC’s commitment to preparing both educators and students for an AI-enhanced academic environment. 

The guidelines emphasize thoughtful and transparent use of AI with a focus on keeping human connection central to learning. Educators are encouraged to clarify expectations for AI use in syllabi, model responsible practice, verify AI-generated content for accuracy, and protect student privacy by using secure university-approved tools such as those available through the Garnet AI Foundry. Instructors are also encouraged to help students build AI literacy by analyzing outputs critically, recognizing bias, and understanding limitations.  

The CTE provides a growing collection of programs, consultations, and resources to support educators in exploring generative AI in teaching and learning. The Guiding Principles for AI Use in Teaching will continue to expand with additional reflection prompts, strategies, examples, and use cases to help educators incorporate AI responsibly and effectively across disciplines.
